Chanel Joins The Club: Quits Exotic Fur

Prior to Chanel’s Metiers d’Art exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2019, Chanel stated that “they will not use exotic furs in future creations.”

The exotic furs are crocodile, lizard, snake, stripes, and fur that Chanel uses very little. The decision is due to the fact that it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a skin that meets the quality and ethical standards of the home. “There is a supply problem and it was not Chanel’s business,” said Bruno Pavlovsky, president of Chanel Fashion and president of Chanel SAS. “We did it because it’s in the air, but it’s not air that people force us to do, it’s a free choice.”

The brand’s attention will focus on the research and development of materials and leathers produced in the “food industry”. “The future of high-end products will come from knowing what our workshop can do,” Pavlovsky continued. However, it will take some time for existing products on exotic skins to completely leave the Chanel distribution network.

Chanel is the first luxury brand to join the brands, including Asos, Nike, H&M, Puma, Arcadia Group and L Brands, which have already banned exotic skins in their product offering. Personalities such as Armani, Coach, Versace, Michael Kors, Gucci, Burberry, and John Galliano do everything to end the use of skins. However, they have not made the leap to include all skins.
